Cultural Insight |
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight. |
Hoang Anh: "Waiter or waitress" is bồi bàn in Vietnamese. But in a restaurant, we just say “Hey you” or Em ơi. Em, meaning "you", is a pronoun used for a younger person and ơi is used to call someone. Most waiters and waitresses in Vietnam are younger, which is why they use this. If they look older, then Chị ơi for a woman, and Anh ơi for a man, is used. |
