INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone. I’m Becky. Welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com This is the Absolute Beginner series, Season 1, Lesson 24 - Talking About Weekend Plans in Vietnamese.
Huyen: Xin chào! I’m Huyen.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn the future tense. The conversation takes place at school and is between An and Lan. The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Vietnamese.
DIALOGUE
An: Cuối tuần này bạn sẽ làm gì?
Lan: Tớ sẽ đi dã ngoại.
An: Ồ, vui nhỉ. Bạn đi với ai thế?
Lan: Với gia đình tớ. Còn bạn?
An: Tớ sẽ đi mua sắm với chị.
Lan: Bạn lên phố Bà Triệu ấy, có nhiều đồ rẻ và đẹp lắm.
An: What are you going to do this weekend?
Lan: I'm going on a picnic.
An: Oh, sounds fun. Who are you going with?
Lan: With my family. What about you?
An: I will go shopping with my elder sister.
Lan: Go to Ba Trieu Street. There are many cheap and nice items.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Huyen, what do Vietnamese families do on weekends?
Huyen: Family parties are quite popular.
Becky: I love family parties! The whole family gathers in one place, everyone is together; children, grandparents, cousins and so on. Do they cook together too?
Huyen: Yes, they do. Everyone prepares the food together and enjoys spending time with each other.
Becky: What kind of food do they eat?
Huyen: Hot pots are among most people’s favorites.
Becky: Right, because it’s perfect for a large group of people. Everyone can sit around the large pot, enjoy drinking and talking about daily things like work, school, and many other things. Do many family members go out together?
Huyen: Yeah, more families eat out nowadays. They tend to choose a nice restaurant, go for a picnic, or enjoy barbecues.
Becky: It’s more convenient to eat at restaurants because it saves time.
Huyen: You’re right. Young families also like to hang out with friends in shopping malls or department stores.
Becky: Yeah, small children really like those places because there are many interesting things for them to see and do.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is...
Huyen: Đi dã ngoại
Becky: “Go for a picnic”. This phrase can also be said in a half Vietnamese, half English way as in...
Huyen: ...đi picnic.
Becky: The word “picnic” is now understood by all Vietnamese as a Vietnamese word, so if it’s difficult for you to pronounce...
Huyen: ...dã ngoại...
Becky: ...you can use the phrase…
Huyen: ...đi picnic.
Becky: Let’s hear some examples.
Huyen: Chủ nhật này cả lớp tôi sẽ đi picnic.
Becky: “This Sunday our class is going for a picnic”.
Huyen: Đi picnic là một cách thư giãn tốt.
Becky: “Going for a picnic is a good way to relax”.
Huyen: The second word is a preposition với.
Becky: It means “with” or “and”.
Huyen: Tôi học cùng lớp với anh ấy.
Becky: “I am in the same class as him.”
Huyen: Tôi với anh ấy là bạn học.
Becky: “He and I are classmates.”
Huyen: Lan với anh ấy là một cặp.
Becky: “Lan and that guy are a couple.”
Huyen: The next is the word ấy.
Becky: It has different meanings as it plays different roles in different sentences. When it’s an adverb, it means that the object was mentioned at least once before, or is already known.
Huyen: For example, Cậu cho tớ mượn cuốn truyện ‘Harry Potter’ được không? Cuốn truyện ấy rất hay.
Becky: “Can you lend me your ‘Harry Potter’ book? That book is great!”
Huyen: When ấy is a particle…
Becky: ...it highlights the object with it. For example...
Huyen: ...Nếu anh muốn mua xe máy thì lên phố Huế ấy. Ở đó có nhiều cửa hàng xe máy.
Becky: “If you want to buy a motorbike, go to Hue street. There are many motorbike stores there.” Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the future tense. In the dialogue you hear...
Huyen: ...Tớ sẽ đi dã ngoại.
Becky: “I’m going to a picnic”. The sentence begins with...
Huyen: ...Tớ…
Becky: ...which means “I”, followed by the adverb…
Huyen: ...sẽ…
Becky: ...meaning “will” or “going to”. Next comes the main verb…
Huyen: ...đi…
Becky: ...meaning “to go” and the object…
Huyen: ...dã ngoại…
Becky: ...which means “a picnic”. Another example from the dialogue is...
Huyen: Tớ sẽ đi mua sắm với chị.
Becky: This sentence has the same subject, which is...
Huyen: ...tớ...
Becky: ...followed by the adverb...
Huyen: ...sẽ...
Becky: ...then the main verb phrase...
Huyen: ...đi mua sắm...
Becky: ...“to go shopping”. So in brief, to express a future action, simply add the adverb...
Huyen: ...sẽ…
Becky: ...which means “will” or “going to” before the main verb then add an object, if any. The time phrase, which is optional, can come at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. Let’s hear some more examples.
Huyen: Ngày mai tôi sẽ mua tivi mới.
Becky: "Tomorrow I’m going to buy a new TV."
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ tốt nghiệp đại học vào tháng tới.
Becky: "She’s going to graduate from University next month."
Huyen: Tôi sẽ làm xong việc sớm.
Becky: “I’ll finish work soon.”
Huyen: Tôi sẽ gọi cho cô ấy ngay.
Becky: “I will call her immediately.” As you can hear from the examples, there are several future time phrases that can be used regularly.
Huyen: Firstly, mai or ngày mai.
Becky: “Tomorrow”
Huyen: Tuần tới, Tháng tới, or năm tới
Becky: “Next week”, “next month”, or “next year”
Huyen: Sớm
Becky: “Soon”
Huyen: Ngay
Becky: “Right away” or “immediately”
Huyen: Please check the lesson notes, for the detailed usage of these phrases.
Becky: So, what are you going to do this weekend? Can you say it in Vietnamese?
Huyen: We hope that it’s easier for you to say, now that you’ve done this lesson.
Becky: If you have any questions, please leave us a comment.

Outro

Becky: That’s it for this lesson. Thank you for listening everyone, and we’ll see you next time!
