KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Huyen: lưu ý
Becky: which means “to note,” “to pay attention.” You can use this word to give reminders about important things which people tend to make mistakes about or overlook. You can often find it in written texts, newspapers, or public announcements.
Huyen: We also use lưu ý in daily conversation but not so often. You can use lưu ý with a noun or noun phrase.
Becky: In this case, it will mean “to pay attention to something.”
Huyen: You can also say lưu ý and then add không or đừng with verb phrases after them.
Becky: It will mean something like “Attention! Don't do…”. Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson you’ll learn how to use the future simple tense in Vietnamese. There is no specific verb tense in Vietnamese to describe future actions.
Huyen: Right. We use an auxilary verb, sẽ, to express future tense.
Becky: You don't need to change the verb, you can just add some time phrases at the beginning or the end of the sentence.
Huyen: To form the future tense in Vietnamese, first say sẽ and then add a verb.
Becky: The whole sentence structure will be…
Huyen: Subject... sẽ…. main verb...object. And after that, you can say the prepositions vào or trong, meaning “in” or “at” respectively, and then the time phrase. Or you can say vào or trong plus a time phrase at the beginning of the sentence. The rest of the structure remains the same.
Becky: Okay. How can we use it in a sentence?
Huyen: Tôi sẽ làm xong việc sớm.
Becky: which means “I will finish the work soon.”
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ đến.
Becky: “She will come.” Now let’s give some examples with the time phrases.
Huyen: Sure. Tôi sẽ đi Paris trong hai tuần nữa.
Becky: “I will go to Paris in two weeks.”
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ nghỉ việc vào tháng tới or tháng sau.
Becky: “She will quit her job next month.” Huyen, how can we form the negative form in future tense?
Huyen: You can just add không, meaning “not” or “no” after sẽ to make the negative form. The other parts remain the same.
Becky: Can you give us some examples?
Huyen: Sure. Trời sẽ không mưa.
Becky: “It will not rain.”
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ không thôi việc vào tháng tới or tháng sau.
Becky: “She will not quit her job next month.”
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ không đến.
Becky: “She will not come.” Listeners, if you want to confirm whether a statement is true or not you can just add a particle...
Huyen: ... chứ,
Becky: ...which means the same as the English “right” at the end of the affirmative statement to make the question form. The other parts remain the same. For example…
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ đến chứ?
Becky: “She will come, right?”
Huyen: Cô ấy sẽ thôi việc vào tháng sau chứ?
Becky: “She will quit her job next month, right?” So how would you answer this tag question in Vietnamese?
Huyen: If your answer is positive, you can say Vâng or Ừ. Vâng is for an older person, and Ừ is for a younger person or someone around your age.
Becky: And if the answer is negative?
Huyen: You can say Không phải ạ to answer an older person and Không phải to reply to someone younger or around your age.

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn.
