INTRODUCTION |
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 17 - Going on a Shopping Spree in Vietnam. Becky here. |
Huyen: Xin Chào. I'm Huyen. |
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask “Is it right?” in Vietnamese. The conversation takes place in a silk store. |
Huyen: It's between Anne and Mai, the store assistant. |
Becky: The speakers are meeting each other for the first time, so they’ll be using formal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
Lesson conversation
|
Mai: Cửa hàng chúng tôi đang giảm 20% (hai mươi phần trăm) cho toàn bộ sản phẩm. Mời chị xem hàng ạ. |
Anne: Giá trên chiếc khăn này là giá gốc ạ? |
Mai: Vâng, chị cứ lấy giá trên mác trừ đi 20% (hai mươi phần trăm) nhé. |
Anne: Giá ghi trên này là 300.000 đồng (ba trăm ngàn đồng). Vậy giá hiện tại là 240.000 (hai trăm bốn mươi ngàn) phải không ạ? |
Mai: Đúng rồi chị. |
Anne: Cho tôi lấy chiếc này. |
Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly. |
Mai: Cửa hàng chúng tôi đang giảm 20% (hai mươi phần trăm) cho toàn bộ sản phẩm. Mời chị xem hàng ạ. |
Anne: Giá trên chiếc khăn này là giá gốc ạ? |
Mai: Vâng, chị cứ lấy giá trên mác trừ đi 20% (hai mươi phần trăm) nhé. |
Anne: Giá ghi trên này là 300.000 đồng (ba trăm ngàn đồng). Vậy giá hiện tại là 240.000 (hai trăm bốn mươi ngàn) phải không ạ? |
Mai: Đúng rồi chị. |
Anne: Cho tôi lấy chiếc này. |
Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Mai: Our store is running a 20% off sale on all products. Please take a look. |
Anne: Is the price on this scarf the original price? |
Mai: Yes. Take the labeled price and subtract 20% from that—you'll get the current selling price. |
Anne: The price written here is 300,000 dong. That means the selling price is 240,000, doesn’t it? |
Mai: That's right, Miss. |
Anne: I'll get this. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Becky: Huyen, I know that Vietnam is famous for different silk products, ranging from handkerchiefs and scarfs to ties and handbags with fine embroidered patterns. |
Huyen: Yes. Silk is an important part of Vietnamese culture. |
Becky: Where is most silk production done in Vietnam? |
Huyen: In Van Phuc village. It’s located in the center of Ha Dong town, which is about 10 kilometers southwest of Hanoi. |
Becky: Can you take a tour there? |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Huyen: toàn bộ |
Becky: which means “all” or “whole.” This word indicates the total of people or things, usually in the same place, as a whole. You can use it with both countable and uncountable nouns. |
Huyen: toàn bộ plus noun means “all of…” |
Becky: Okay, what's the next word? |
Huyen: trừ đi |
Becky: which means “to deduct, to subtract, to exclude.” You can use this verb when calculating. Just put it between two numbers in the formula. |
Huyen: Right. The larger number comes before trừ đi, the smaller number comes after it. |
Becky: Okay, what's the next word? |
Huyen: lấy |
Becky: which means “to choose and agree to take something,” usually after considering for a while. You can often hear this word in shopping situations. |
Huyen: Right. We often say this while holding or pointing at the desired item. Tôi lấy cái này |
Becky: which means “I’ll take this.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask “Is it right?” in Vietnamese. |
Huyen: To ask this question, you can use the phrase...Phải không ạ? which means “Is it right?” |
Becky: The rule is very simple. Just put it right after a statement to confirm that what has been said in the statement is right. It’s used like a question tag in English. |
Huyen: The particle ạ indicates that this question is used to ask an older person or someone in a formal situation. |
Becky: Then how can we reduce its level of formality, for example, when talking to a friend? |
Huyen: You can simply remove ạ and use just phải không. |
Becky: The sentence structure is subject...verb...object... |
Huyen: phải không ạ? or phải không? |
Becky: Huyen, can you give us some examples? |
Huyen: Sure. Anh là Nam phải không ạ? or simply Anh là Nam phải không? |
Becky: This sentence means “You’re Nam, aren’t you?” |
Huyen: Đây là bàn của tôi phải không ạ? or, in informal situations, Đây là bàn của tôi phải không? |
Becky: “This is my table, isn’t it?” |
Huyen: Cô ấy làm việc ở bệnh viện phải không ạ? or Cô ấy làm việc ở bệnh viện phải không? |
Becky: “She works at the hospital, doesn’t she?” Huyen, now let’s explain to our listeners how to answer such a question. |
Huyen: It is very simple. If your answer is positive, you can say Vâng or đúng rồi. It means “Yes, that’s right.” Vâng is for an older person, and đúng rồi for a younger person or someone around your age. |
Becky: And if the answer is negative? |
Huyen: You can say Không phải ạ, meaning “No, it isn’t” to answer an older person and Không phải to reply to a younger person or someone around your age. |
Outro
|
Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn. |
