Hey there, it's Ling again. Welcome back to vietnamespod101.com,
the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Vietnamese.
In this video today, we're going to talk about something like,
like, you know, something like this.
I mean, it's like, like this, like, like what?
It's like, like this, like filler words.
So in Vietnamese, we also have some words like that for some situations
where you don't know what to say next, or you're trying to find some ideas,
or when you're buying time, just to have some more time to think about what happens next.
And let's see what they are.
The first one and also the most common one in Vietnamese, I have to say that is
kiểu như là
kiểu như là
My tone is a little bit low, kiểu như là, okay?
kiểu như là, that means “like”, “it's like”, “something like”, “something like that”, “something like that”, okay?
So it literally means “something like”, or “it's like”.
Hôm nay chúng ta sẽ nói về kiểu như là…
Hôm nay chúng ta sẽ bàn về kiểu như là…
“something like that.”So when you don't know what to say, you can say, kiểu như là, it's like you're trying to find some ideas.
kiểu như là….
kiểu như là….
The next one is also very common, but it's a little bit shorter.
Basically, it means like, “to be” verb, “to be” verb, okay?
In Vietnamese, we say
For example
Tôi là Linh: “I am Linh”, okay?
Or
thì
thì
thì
something like
Cô ấy thì cũng được
Cô ấy thì cũng tốt
Something like that.
“She's like”, “she's okay,” or “she's like nice”, something like that, okay?
So when you say thì or là in the middle of the sentence, it's like “something is”, “like”, and you're trying to find the next words.
The next one, when you want to buy some time and you want to have some more time to think, you can say, you can ask the person like, do you understand?
So in Vietnamese, we have a word like that, you can say
hiểu không
hiểu không
hiểu không
hiểu không okay?
hiểu không is like “Do you understand?” or “Do you get me?”
hiểu không
Tôi đang giới thiệu cho các bạn một vài từ mới, hiểu không?
Tôi đang giới thiệu cho các bạn một vài từ mới, hiểu không?
Tôi đang giới thiệu cho các bạn một vài từ mới, hiểu không?
That means “I'm introducing to you guys some new vocabulary, do you understand?”, or “Do you get me?”, or “You know what I mean?”, something like that, okay?
So hiểu không is like “Do you get me?”, “You know what I mean?”
hiểu không
The next one is also a little bit common, for some people, sometimes they have a habit of saying đúng không?, it means “right?”
or they want to find some agreement from the listener.
đúng không?
đúng không is like to confirm whether that person agrees with them, đúng không?
But for spoken Vietnamese, we will not pronounce too clearly like đúng không, but usually we say like đúng hông, đúng hông, đúng mông, it's like đúng mông, đúng không, đúng không?
I'm pronouncing it like this, đúng hông? đúng không? Ok?
It's like, “is that right?, or “do you agree?”, or “right?”
Or in sentence you can say
Vietnamesepod101.com rất thú vị, đúng không?
Vietnamesepod101.com rất thú vị, đúng không?
Vietnamesepod101.com rất thú vị, đúng không?
Ok, next one is also very common and a lot of people, a lot of Vietnamese people have the habit of saying these words
Nói chung là
Nói chung là
Nói chung là actually means “basically” or “actually”, it's like “in general”, something like that.
So someone wants to summarize what they say or someone wants you to have an overview about what they say:
Nói chung là, Linh dạy tiếng Việt rất hay.
Nói chung là, Linh blah blah blah, something like that
So when you comment or when you talk about something and you want to show your opinion, you can say Nói chung là
But don't use it too much, ok, don't overuse it
Nói chung là
The next one is also very popular, the reason why it's popular is because it's like a linking word
So in English when you say “and then” or “after that” or “then” or “next”
So in Vietnamese we will say like
xong rồi
xong rồi
xong rồi
ok?
xong rồi means like “and then”, and “then”, and “then”
And actually you can repeat this for many times without any problems
When we speak in Vietnamese, some people will have a habit of repeating some words a lot and it's like their favorite words
So when you say xong rồi, xong rồi, xong rồi, that's fine, that's totally fine, it sounds very natural and it sounds more Vietnamese
In sentence you can say
Hôm qua Linh đi làm buổi sáng, xong rồi Linh đi ăn trưa.
Xong rồi buổi chiều thì Linh đi siêu thị, xong rồi Linh về nhà.
So we will say like xong rồi, xong rồi, xong rồi all the time
But when we speak fast, we will not say xong rồi that clearly, but we say like xong rồi, xong ngồi
Something like xong ngồi, xong ngồi, xong ngồi, something like that, ok
So I hope it helps.
Alright, so those are basically almost everything that I could find
I was trying really hard to find some other filler words, but I think it's better to reduce filler words
Because it's really good if you can speak Vietnamese fluently like a native speaker, like a Vietnamese speaker, right?
But also sometimes when you really know how to use these kinds of words, you will sound more natural.
I think so, and it will just prove that you really learn the language, you really learn the culture
And you really learn the speaking habits of Vietnamese people.
And that's it for today, I hope that you enjoyed this video
