Xin chào, tôi là Giang. Hi everybody! I’m Giang. |
Welcome to VietnamesePod101.com’s “3 phút học tiếng Việt”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Vietnamese. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to use Vietnamese adjectives. |
In this lesson we will start a series dedicated to the most common Vietnamese verbs, the ones you will definitely hear all the time! |
Our first verb will be đi, which means "to go". |
So, imagine someone asks you Bạn sẽ đi đâu vào ngày nghỉ? That means "Where are you going for your holidays?" |
So if you are going to the beach, for example, you will say Tôi sẽ đi biển. |
So let’s break down this answer. |
Tôi is "I", |
sẽ means “will” or “going to”. It’s a helping verb, added before a verb to express that it’s taking place in the future. |
đi means “to go” |
and biển means “beach or sea”. |
Basically, when you want to talk about your destination, add that place after the verb đi. No preposition is needed. For example- |
đi Hà Nội: “go to Hanoi: |
đi bảo tàng: “go to the museum” |
đi vườn thú: “go to the zoo” |
đi chợ: “go to the market” |
Like the verb “go” in English, the Vietnamese verb đi can be combined with another verb to make a set phrase. |
For example: |
đi chơi (go + play): “go out” |
đi học (go + study): “go to school” |
đi làm (go + work): “go to work" or "go to the office” |
đi ngủ (go + sleep): “go to sleep” |
đi ăn (go + eat): “go out to eat" or "eat out” |
đi hát karaoke (go + sing karaoke): “go sing karaoke” |
Note that you just need to add another verb after đi, then you’ll have the phrase. No changes in the verb forms are needed. |
And there’s one more thing to remember - no matter what the subject, the verb đi stays the same, you don’t need to change its form like in English. |
For example: |
Tôi đi siêu thị: “I go to the supermarket.” |
Anh ấy đi siêu thị: “He goes to the supermarket.” |
It’s very easy to remember, right? |
Now it’s time for Giang’s Insights. |
In Vietnam, you may hear people say đi đến + somewhere. đến is a linking word, which has the same meaning as “to” in English. For example: đi đến trường - “go to school”, đi đến công ty - “go to the company”. Sometimes, people just say đến + somewhere without đi, such as đến trường - go to school. Note that the verb đến also means “to come” but in this case, it means “to”, to show the place you’re heading to. |
So, in this lesson, we learned how to use the verb đi. |
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, làm. |
Do you know what this verb means? I’ll be waiting for you in the next 3 phút học tiếng Việt lesson. |
Tạm biệt |
