POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Brandon: Huyen, do you have any tips or special notes for our listeners about money exchange? |
Huyen: US dollars are the most convenient because you can exchange them for Vietnamese dong even in small bank branches. If you want to exchange other currencies, you may have to go to the head office of each bank. |
Brandon: Also, you should expect to carry a lot of notes with you after exchanging to dong. And make sure to check the notes you receive, because damaged notes are not accepted in any shops or restaurants. |
Huyen: That’s right. In particular, don’t mistake the 500,000 dong note for the 20,000 dong note because they look quite similar. To avoid confusion, keep them separate. |
Brandon: Those are some good tips, listeners! Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Brandon: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first key word we have is… |
Huyen: mời |
Brandon: "please" |
Huyen: ”Mời” is the short form of “Xin mời” that we learned in another lesson. It also means “please.” |
Brandon: It's added before a pronoun, and then followed by a main verb to make a polite request to someone, but it can only be used with certain verbs. |
Huyen: The word “mời” itself means “to invite,” so literally, the request is more like an invitation for someone to do something. |
Brandon: Let’s give our listeners an example. |
Huyen: Mời chị ngồi |
Brandon: "Please sit down, miss." |
Huyen: The second word is, đợi |
Brandon: Which means "to wait." It can be followed by a noun, pronoun, or a person’s name to express that you're waiting for someone or something. For example... |
Huyen: Tôi đang đợi một người bạn. |
Brandon: "I’m waiting for a friend." |
Huyen: “đợi” can also be followed by a noun, a pronoun, or person’s name plus a verb phrase right after that, to mean that you're waiting for someone to do something. |
Brandon: Here’s a sample sentence. |
Huyen: Minh đang đợi bạn gái mua đồ trong siêu thị. |
Brandon: "Minh is waiting for his girlfriend to buy things in the supermarket." |
Huyen: Finally, we have, quầy |
Brandon: Which means "Counter" or "booth." It also refers to a stall or a kiosk. |
Huyen: The noun or verb phrase indicating the type of counter or kiosk comes after “quầy”. |
Brandon: For example... |
Huyen: quầy lễ tân |
Brandon: "reception counter" Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Brandon: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use ordinal numbers. Let’s listen to the sample sentence in the dialogue again. |
Huyen: Mời chị đợi ở quầy thứ ba phía bên phải. |
Brandon: "Please wait at the third counter on your right." |
Huyen: The main phrase here is “quầy thứ ba” |
Brandon: "The third counter" |
Huyen: To form an ordinal number, simply add the word “thứ”, meaning “order” or “rank,” before a cardinal number. |
Brandon: For example... |
Huyen: thứ hai |
Brandon: "the second" |
Huyen: thứ năm |
Brandon: "the fifth" |
Huyen: thứ mười chín |
Brandon: "the nineteenth." There are some exceptions, which are “the first”, “the fourth”, and “the last”. |
Huyen: The first is “thứ nhất” or “đầu tiên” instead of “thứ một”. The fourth is “thứ tư” instead of “thứ bốn”. And “the last” is “cuối cùng” without “thứ” |
Brandon: Let’s listen again. "The first" is... |
Huyen: “thứ nhất” OR “đầu tiên” |
Brandon: " The fourth" is |
Huyen: thứ tư |
Brandon: And "the last" is |
Huyen: cuối cùng |
Brandon: To use an ordinal number in a noun phrase, add it right after the main noun. Let’s put them all in sample sentences. For example.. |
Huyen: Quyển sách này bị mất trang cuối cùng. |
Brandon: “The last page of this book is missing.” |
Huyen: To talk about the order or position in a ranking, the verb “đứng,” which means “to stand,” is added before the ordinal number. |
Brandon: This literally means “stand at the.[something]..position in the ranking” For example.. |
Huyen: Bài hát này đứng vị trí thứ ba trong bảng xếp hạng MTV tuần này. |
Brandon: "This song is at the third position in MTV's ranking this week." |
Huyen: Alright, that’s all for the ordinal numbers. Listeners, can you say this next sentence in Vietnamese? |
Brandon: "This is the twenty-second lesson.” |
[pause] |
Huyen: Have you got your answer yet? The correct answer is, “Đây là bài học thứ hai mươi hai.” |
Brandon: Is this answer the same as yours? Let us know in the comments! |
Outro
|
Brandon: And that’s all for this lesson. Make sure to check the lesson notes to review what you’ve learned, and we’ll see you next time. Thanks for listening, bye! |
Huyen: Tạm biệt! |
