POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Brandon: Huyen, what kind of music is popular in Vietnam? |
Huyen: I’d have to say that modern pop is the most popular. Vietnamese pop music is highly influenced by Korean pop, Chinese pop, and Japanese pop—both in music and fashion style. |
Brandon: I see. Those Korean and Japanese idol groups must be a big favorite, right? |
Huyen: Definitely. But American pop music is popular too, especially for English learners . Teens are crazy about K-pop and J-pop, but those who study English as a major are not interested in them at all. |
Brandon: Is there a kind of YouTube talent phenomenon in Vietnam? |
Huyen: Definitely, yes. Recently some talented young singers have been discovered via their YouTube channels. Those who cover famous English songs are the most popular. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Brandon: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is… |
Huyen: cây |
Brandon: It originally means “a tree”. But it is used as a classifier in this lesson, so there's no equivalent in English. This classifier is used with nouns indicating objects that have a long and straight shapes, like… |
Huyen: cây bút |
Brandon: "a pen" |
Huyen: cây nến |
Brandon: "a candle" |
Huyen: Secondly, we have “mới” |
Brandon: Which means "just" |
Huyen: This adverb is similar to “vừa mới” or “vừa,” which we learned in previous lessons. |
Brandon: its used before a verb to express something that has just happened. |
Huyen: “Mới” is used in the present perfect tense. |
Brandon: For example.. |
Huyen: Tôi mới thi giữa kỳ xong. |
Brandon: "I've just taken my mid-term exam." |
Huyen: The last word is “biết” |
Brandon: Which means "to know." It can be followed by a noun, noun phrase, pronoun, or a person’s name to mean that you know something or someone. |
Huyen: Tôi mới biết tin về cô ấy. |
Brandon: "I've just learned some news about her." |
Huyen: Anh ấy đã biết Lan hai năm rồi. |
Brandon: "He has known Lan for two years." |
Huyen: “biết” can be put before a verb phrase to express that you know how to do something or you are able to do something |
Brandon: For example |
Huyen: Mai biết nói tiếng Pháp. |
Brandon: "Mai knows how to speak French." Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Brandon: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express your interests or hobbies by using the verb... |
Huyen: thích |
Brandon: which means "to like". |
Huyen: In the dialogue, we heard two sample sentences. Firstly, Tớ thích chơi ghi ta. |
Brandon: "I like playing guitar" |
Huyen: Secondly, Tớ cũng thích âm nhạc. |
Brandon: "I also like music." |
Huyen: To express that you like something or someone, add a noun, noun phrase, pronoun, or a person’s name after “thích”. |
Brandon: Let’s hear an example. |
Huyen: Tôi thích cầu lông. |
Brandon: "I like badminton." |
Huyen: “Thích” is not conjugated, so it stays the same regardless of the subject. |
Brandon: To express that you like doing something, add a verb and its object after… |
Huyen: thích. For example: Tôi thích chơi cầu lông. |
Brandon: "I like playing badminton." |
Huyen: To say that you don’t like something or someone, or don’t like doing something, add “không,” which means “not" or "no” before “thích”. |
Brandon: The rest of the sentence remains unchanged. You can avoid saying that you don’t like something directly by adding the adverb... |
Huyen: “lắm”... |
Brandon: … at the end of a sentence to mean that you don’t like something so much or very much. Let’s hear some examples in its negative form. |
Huyen: Tôi không thích chơi cầu lông lắm. |
Brandon: "I don’t like to play badminton that much." |
Huyen: To ask a question using “thích”, add “có” before “thích,” and add “không” at the end of the sentence. The rest remains unchanged. |
Brandon: For example... |
Huyen: Bạn có thích chơi cầu lông không? |
Brandon: “Do you like playing badminton?" |
Outro
|
Brandon: Well, that’s all for this lesson. For a review and more information, don’t forget to check the accompanying lesson notes. Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you in the next lesson. Bye! |
Huyen: Tạm biệt! |
