| Hello! My name is Mian, and I’ll be your language teacher and cultural guide throughout this introductory course. Now, some of you may have trouble saying my name, so I’m gonna break it down for you. |

| Wherever your destination may be, manners are a must. And in this respect, Vietnam is no different. So in our very first lesson, we'll be taking a look at a phrase there is no excuse not to bring you to Vietnam. Again, I’ll stress this over and over: a little bit of the language can go such a long way! |
| In Vietnamese, "Thank you" is Cám ơn. |
| And one time slowly: Cám ơn. |
| Let’s break it down by syllable: Cám ơn. |
| Now, let's hear it again: Cám ơn/. |
| Now, in Vietnamese, there’s a more polite way to express this phrase for very special occasions when someone goes above and beyond the call of being kind, when someone is extremely generous, or for any other time you’re extremely grateful, we have a following phrase to express this - Cám ơn rất nhiều which is roughly the equivalent to “thank you very much.” |

| And now let’s break it down by syllable: Cám ơn rất nhiều. |
| So, let’s just recap here. The more polite way of saying “thank you” in Vietnamese is Cám ơn rất nhiều and the more informal way is Cám ơn. Now, I’ll let you in on a little secret, I primarily use “thank you” which is Cám ơn. The more polite form to say “thank you” is Cám ơn rất nhiều, but most people in Vietnam will use “thank you” Cám ơn, so it’s just two simple syllables - Cám ơn. And you can use it everywhere; at the restaurant, at the market, in the hotel, anywhere. |
