Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 12 - Restaurant 2 - Non-smoking or Smoking in Southern Vietnamese
In Vietnam, smoking in restaurants and cafes is still acceptable. There are occasions where you can ask for a non-smoking seat or perhaps would like a smoking seat. Either way, let’s cover both phrases.
Now remember, when you enter a restaurant, you'll hear Tất cả là mấy người. After answering, you can also include one of the following phrases.
In Vietnamese "non-smoking" is không hút thuốc.
không hút thuốc
Let’s break this down by syllable: không hút thuốc.
không hút thuốc
Now, let’s hear it again, không hút thuốc.
The first word, không should sound very familiar right now. We heard it in the phrase Không có gì for "You're welcome" and Tôi không hiểu for "I don’t understand." As a reminder, không is said in the flat tone and means "no."

This is followed by hút thuốc.
hút thuốc
Both words are said in the rising tone and literally means "smoke medicine."
So again, hút thuốc.
hút thuốc
Let’s practice the entire phrase again, không hút thuốc.
không hút thuốc
Literally, this phrase translates to "no smoke medicine" but we will use it as the English equivalent for "non--smoking."
To say "smoking" hút thuốc.

As you can see, we simply dropped the word không from the previous phrase.

Recently, I was in Vietnam and did not notice any specific areas in restaurants or cafes that were designated for non-smoking. The only places that I saw non-smoking signs were in places like the airport. My recent trip was mostly spent in a smaller city, so if you spend time in Vietnam in one of the bigger cities, I love to hear what you have experienced regarding this issue.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
Okay, here we go!
