Lesson focus

Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 25 - Counting 11-100 in Southern Vietnamese.
Today, we’ll continue with numbers. Last time we covered numbers 1-10. So let’s go over those quickly.
1 is một.
2 is hai.
3 is ba.
4 is bốn.
5 is năm.
6 is sáu.
7 is bảy.
8 is tám.
9 is chín.
10 is mười.
To say from 101 to 109, you simply combine “100” một trăm with linh and a number between 1 and 9.
So, for example, “103” is một trăm linh ba.
một trăm linh ba
So, “100” is một trăm. Literally, it’s “one” một and “hundred” trăm. This logical system provides some insight into counting in hundreds in Vietnamese. To do this, simply proceed trăm which means “100” with a number from 1 to 9.
For example, “400” will be bốn trăm.
Literally, “four” bốn and “hundred” trăm.
So let’s count from 100 to 900 by hundreds.
100 - một trăm
200 - hai trăm
300 - ba trăm
400 - bốn trăm
500 - năm trăm
600 - sáu trăm
700 - bảy trăm
800 - tám trăm
900 - chín trăm
Now, this lesson, combined with the previous one on numbers will allow you to count all the way to 999. In Vietnamese, the word for “thousand” is ngàn.
ngàn
Ngàn is said in the falling tone.
