Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 29 - Directions in Southern Vietnamese 2. |
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you are looking for. Previously we introduced, "Is there a (something) near here." But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. |
Today, we're going to work on understanding what is said. So today, we'll go over basic directions. First we have, “go straight.” In Vietnamese "go straight" is đi thằng. |
đi thằng |
đi thằng |
Let’s break it down by syllable: đi thằng. |
đi thằng |
Here it is again, đi thằng. |
The first word, đi, means "go" and is the flat tone, đi. |
đi |
Đi is followed by thằng. |
thằng |
Thằng falls gradually and literally means "straight." |
thằng |
thằng |
So, to recap here, we have đi thằng. |
đi thằng |
Literally, this means "go straight," just like in English. |
Now, we're going to work on turning. Let's try "turn right" which is quẹo phải. |
quẹo phải |
The first word, quẹo, is the low tone and means "turn." |
quẹo |
quẹo |
Quẹo is followed by phải. |
phải |
Phải is the falling rising tone and means "right." |
phải |
phải |
Putting both words together, we have quẹo phải. |
quẹo phải |
To say "turn left," we only have to change the second word in the previous phrase. |
"Turn left" is quẹo trái. |
quẹo trái |
This is just like in English. |
Let’s break this down and hear it again, quẹo trái |
quẹo trái |
Trái is the rising tone and literally means "left." |
So let’s say this entire phrase again, quẹo trái. |
quẹo trái |
In Vietnamese, to say "it's on the right" is ở bên tay phải. |
ở bên tay phải |
Let’s break this down by syllable: ở bên tay phải. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, ở bên tay phải. |
We’ll break this phrase down into two parts. |
The first part, ở bên, ở bên literally translates into "at side." ở is another word we should be familiar with. It is said in the broken rising tone and bên is the flat tone. |
So again, ở bên. |
ở bên |
The second part of the phrase, tay phải, tay phải means "hand right." |
Tay is the flat tone and phai is the falling rising tone. |
So, let’s say it again, tay phải. |
tay phải |
Let’s practice these two parts together, ở bên tay phải. |
ở bên tay phải. |
Literally this phrase translates as "at side hand right," but we use it as the English equivalent for "it's on the right side." |
To say it's on the left side, we have to just change the last word of the previous phrase, ở bên tay trái. |
ở bên tay trái. |
ở bên tay trái. |
It may be difficult to catch directions the first time around, so if you remember in our previous lesson, you can ask the person to repeat themselves by saying xin noi lai. |
xin noi lai |

|
Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese. |
