Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 33 - Write It Down Please in Southern Vietnamese.
In today’s lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around you. Today, we're gonna to cover a way for you to hold on to the information you get.
In Vietnamese "Can you write it down, please?" is Xin viết giùm.
Xin viết giùm
Let’s break this down by syllable: Xin viết giùm.
Now, let’s hear it once again, Xin viết giùm.
The first word, xin, means "please" and has no tone.
Once again, xin.
xin
This is followed by viết.
viết
Viết in Vietnamese means "to write" and is said in the broken rising tone.

viết
So to recap, we have Xin viết.
Xin viết
Literally, this means "please write."
The last word, giùm, literally means “help” and is a very polite way of asking somebody for a favor.
Giùm falls gradually and usually comes after a verb.
So all together, we have Xin viết giùm.
Xin viết giùm.
Literally, this phrase means “Please do me a favor and write,” but we translate it as “Can you write it down, please?”
Another way to say “Can you write it down, please?” is by replacing the word xin with the phrase làm ơn.
làm ơn
Làm ơn viết giùm.
Làm ơn viết giùm.
Làm falls gradually.
làm
làm
And is followed by ơn.
ơn
Ơn is said with no tone.
ơn
ơn
Làm ơn literally is “please” as in “give me, please” and is a little bit more polite than just xin. But most of the time, làm ơn or xin can be used interchangeably. After you get the hang of this phrase and as a review of our previous lesson, you can ask “How do you say that in Vietnamese?” Tiếng Việt nói thế nào?
Tiếng Việt nói thế nào?
I use both of these phrases a lot in my latest trip to Vietnam, especially for things that were introduced to Vietnam after the war.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
