In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around you. To ask, “How do you read this in Vietnamese ?” is Từ này tiếng Việt đọc thế nào? |

Let’s break it down by syllable: Từ này tiếng Việt đọc thế nào? |
Once again, Từ này tiếng Việt đọc thế nào? |
The first word, từ này, means “this word.” Both words fall gradually. Let’s hear them again, từ này, từ này. This is followed by tiếng Việt, which in Vietnamese is the word for the Vietnamese language, tiếng Việt. |

Now, the next word, đọc, đọc means “to read” and is the low tone, đọc. |

The last words, thế nào, thế nào simply means “how” or “how to.” |

Thế is the rising tone, nào falls gradually. |

Literally, this means “How to read this word in Vietnamese?” |
To ask how to say “How do you read that in Vietnamese?” simply substitute the word “that” từ đó for “this” từ này. |

You can point out the word you want and ask this question. |
You’re probably already aware that Vietnamese has three dialects; Northern, Middle, and Southern. For example, Northern Vietnamese people will use từ đó for the word “that.” Southern Vietnamese people will use cái đó. |
