Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 44 - Renting a Telephone in Southern Vietnam.
In today’s lesson, we’ll cover renting a cell phone, an indispensable tool for the modern day traveler. In Vietnam, you can rent a cell phone at S-Phone, a Korean-Vietnamese company, or many other private phone shops in Vietnam. There are many reasons to pick up a cell phone, and with the number of public phones decreasing due to lack of use, renting a cell phone is becoming an indispensable part of one's travels.
In order to rent a phone, you will need to pay a deposit in most cases. In Vietnamese "I would like to rent a cell phone" is Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
Let’s break this down by syllable: Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
Let’s hear it again, Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
We already know the first two words, tôi muốn.
Tôi muốn means "I want."

Tôi is flat and muốn is rising.

This is followed by thuê, which means "to rent" and is flat.

We already know the next word, một.
Một means "one" and is the low tone.

The next word, cái, cái is a counter for things, such as machines, small objects, and many other items. So to count a cell phone, you simply say một cái.

hai cái - “two cell phones”
So let’s hear it again, cái, cái.
The last words, di động, di động means "portable" or "mobile" and is short for điện thoại di động, which is “mobile phone” in Vietnamese.

Di is flat and động is the low tone.
So all together, we have Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
Tôi muốn thuê một cái di động.
Literally, this means "I would like to rent a cell phone.”
As far as I know, incoming calls in Vietnam are all free. If you want to call back home, you should make calls from a landline, since it’s usually really expensive from cell phones.
In this day and age, there may be instances when you want to rent more than one phone. In this case, you would add the number of cell phones you want. So for example, "I would like to rent two phones" is Tôi muốn thuê hai cái di động.
Tôi muốn thuê hai cái di động.
"I would like to rent three phones" is Tôi muốn thuê ba cái di động.
Tôi muốn thuê ba cái di động.
