Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 46 - I'm a Vegetarian in Southern Vietnamese. |
Today’s lesson is not only for all the vegetarians out there, but also for anyone with an adversity to a particular food. There are many reasons a person won't eat a particular food, and there may be instances when communicating this is necessary. So today, we'll go over some phrases to ensure you don't get any unwanted surprises on that plate. |
In Vietnamese "I’m a vegetarian!" is Tôi ăn chay. |
Tôi ăn chay. |
Let’s break this down: Tôi ăn chay. |
Once again, Tôi ăn chay. |
All the words in this phrase are the flat tone. |
The first word, tôi, we know means "I" or “me.” |
tôi |
tôi |
The second word may be familiar too, ăn. |
ăn |
Ăn means "eat." |
ăn |
This is followed by chay, chay which means “vegan food.” |
chay |
chay |
So all together, Tôi ăn chay. Literally this means "I eat vegan food" or in other words "I’m a vegetarian!" |
Another way you can communicate that you don't eat meat is by saying “I don’t eat meat!” which is Tôi không ăn thịt. |
Tôi không ăn thịt. |
Let’s break this down: Tôi không ăn thịt. |
Once again, Tôi không ăn thịt. |
There are two words we have yet to cover here, không and thit. |
Now, to begin with, không means "negative" like no or none, does not or do not. |
không |
không |
Không with a verb behind it means "does not" or "be not." |
The other word, thit, means “meat.” |
thit |
thit |
So all together, we have Tôi không ăn thịt. Literally, this means "I don't eat meat." |
This sentence pattern can be used for foods other than meat by changing just one word. So let’s take a look at some other possibilities. Let's try "fish." "Fish" is cá. |
cá |
Cá is the falling tone. |
cá |
So to say "I don't eat fish!" tôi không ăn cá. |
tôi không ăn cá |
Vegan food in Vietnam has a long history along with Buddhism. Since monks of this religion are not allowed to eat meat and fish, they can’t kill precious lives, so they eat vegan food every day. |
