Hi Dean,

In the list, 4 & 6 are the correct ways to say.

Though the others are incorrect, they are still understandable to the local.

Let us know if you still have any questions.

Cheers,

Chi Pham

I want to say: I don't know how to open the door.

Which of these are acceptable and which ones are more common:

1. Tôi không biết làm mở cửa thế nào?

2. Tôi không biết mở cửa làm thế nào?

3. Tôi không biết làm mở cửa làm thế nào?

4. Tôi không biết mở cửa thế nào?

5. Tôi không biết làm mở cửa như thế nào?

6. Tôi không biết mở cửa như thế nào?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Weng Fook,

Thank you for your question.

Basically, "đồ ăn" and "thức ăn" both mean "food" in general and can be used interchangeably.

However, "thức ăn" is also used to refer to the main dishes of a meal, apart from rice and soup, For your information, in a typical Vietnamese meal, there is a main dish (thức ăn), rice (cơm) and soup (canh). There can be more than one main dish and soup can be replaced by boiled or stir-fried vegetables. Any food other than rice and soup is called "thức ăn". "Đồ ăn" is rarely used in this case.

Cheers,

Giang

What is the difference between 'đồ ăn' (as used in #8) and 'thuc an' ( as used here # 10)
